Biochemical and Physiological Characteristics of Neonates Born to Mothers with Diabetes During Gestation

Abstract: Summary:The aim of this study was to investigate how glucose homeostasis disorders influence biochemical homeostasis and fetal maturation. A prospective ran domized study included 102 infants: 31 new borns of mothers with glucose homeostasis disorders (Group I) and 71 newborns of healthy mothers (Group II). In the preg nant women, the mean age, body weight and height, BMI, parity, duration of the disease and the mode of labor were esti mated. The following procedures were perfor med in each new born infant: ph… Show more

“…The commencement of our home-based exercise intervention upon diagnosis of GDM improved daily postprandial glucose control but did not significantly alter HbA 1c , glucose tolerance, or the insulin response to the postintervention OGTT. The lower postprandial glucose in EX may have significant benefits for both mother and child, given the serious acute and long-term health consequences of maternal hyperglycemia (24,(27)(28)(29)32,33).…”

“…P ronounced insulin resistance, impaired insulin secretion, and resultant hyperglycemia associated with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) can have serious lifelong health consequences for women (32,33) and their offspring (24,(27)(28)(29)32,33). Accordingly, management of GDM is aimed at maintaining maternal normoglycemia (4.0-7.0 mM) through a combination of dietary manipulation, self-monitoring of capillary blood glucose, and insulin therapy, depending on the severity of the condition (20).…”
