“…Sessoet al [1973], com paring the newly born rat with the adult one, observed in the first instance a very small amount of RER which already develops in the first 48 hours. On the other hand, the level of cytoplasmic RNA is low, as reported by Sesso et al [1973], during the first 2 postnatal weeks, reaching levels from 20 to 40 days for adult animal.…”

“…Sesso et al [1973] report a big quan tity of voluminous zymogen granules in the first postnatal days (also a higher number of condensing vacuoles), more numerous and of lesser bulk in the more mature animal, besides a lesser extrusion in the first 15 postnatal days, as well as an increase in synthesis followed by extrusion. Nevertheless, they affirm that there is higher synthesis than extrusion at the 30th-to 40th-day stage, a fact which might corres pond to an increase in the volume occupied in the cell by the zymogen granules; notwith standing, on morphometry there would be a decrease.…”

“…Nonetheless, our results show that incorporation of labeled leucine into protein proceeds at a slower rate in the suckling than in the adult rat. Utilizing different experi mental conditions, slower rates of tritiated leucine incorporation into protein in suckling [19] and late fetal [20] pancreas compared to adult have been reported previously. It is not clear whether the decreased rates of incorpo ration are due to changes in the precursor pool of amino acids or to a true difference in the rate of protein synthesis.…”

“…SESSO et al (1973b) and ERMAK and ROTHMAN (1980) observed in newborn rat that the pancreatic acinar cell secretory granules were much larger than those from older rats, and REDMAN and SREEBNY (1971) described an opposite secretory granule diameter variation in acinar cells of the developing parotid gland of the rat. The mechanisms underlying secretory granule diameter increase and decrease in developing terminal tubule and acinar cells are as yet undetermined.…”
