Biochemical Effect of Carbaryl on Oxidative stress, Antioxidant enzymes and Osmolytes of Cyanobacterium Calothrix brevissima

Abstract: Carbaryl is used in Indian agriculture for control of rice field pests and it is next to Benzene hexachloride in pesticide consumption. In present study, carbaryl (0, 10, 20, 30 and 40 mg/L) induced toxic effects were observed after 21 days exposure on a non target rice field biofertilizer Calothrix brevissima with special reference to oxidative stress, antioxidant enzymes and osmolytes. At 40 mg/L carbaryl the decrease in carotenoid, chlorophyll, phycobilin and protein were 63%, 43%, 40% and 40% respectively … Show more

“…Although carbaryl and other insecticides can cause oxidative stress and cell lysis in cyanobacteria, the potential effect of carbaryl on the cyanobacteria itself can be excluded. Indeed, the concentrations needed to elicit such a response are a factor 1000 higher than the concentrations used in the present study . Alternatively, the targeted mode of action of carbaryl is the inhibition of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase.…”

“…CSCs have been described as a subset of cells within a heterogeneous tumor that share a number of features with normal stem cells. CSCs are characterized by self-renewal, the expression of specific surface markers, and aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) activity 8,9 . CSCs are also involved in tumor initiation, metastasis, and chemoresistance 10 .…”

“…Carbaryl could also be generating an oxidative stress situation and inducing antioxidant responses in PC12 cells. Pesticideinduced oxidative stress is the ultimate manifestation of a multistep pathway, resulting in an imbalance between prooxidant and antioxidant defense mechanisms (Banerjee, Seth, & Ahmed, 2001), and affects normal cellular redox status (Habib, Kumar, Manikar, Zutshi, & Fatma, 2011). Carbaryl treatment resulted in a significant increase in the levels of MDA, SOD inhibition rate, and RFI, this suggested induction of oxidative stress to PC12 cells.…”
