Biochemical Fractionation of Soil Organic Matter after Incorporation of Organic Residues

Abstract: Soil organic matter (SOM) is a key factor for building and maintaining soil quality. The SOM quality is commonly assessed using densitometric and sieving separation methods, but such methods do not inform on the biochemical composition of SOM. Our objective was to evaluate the van Soest extraction procedure for soluble (SOL), holocellulose (HOLO) and lignin/cutin (LIC) fractions of SOM after incorporating crop residues and animal wastes into a C-depleted loamy sand. Millet cuttings, oat straw, fresh cattle man… Show more

“…ASVs, representing 9.5% and 20% of total sequence abundance in water and sediment samples, respectively). An adjacency matrix was computed using the function adjacency on the centred logratio transformed ASV sequence counts (clr function, package compositions; (Parent and Parent, 2015)) to ensure sub-compositional coherence. The function infers ASVs connectivity by calculating an ASV similarity matrix (based on Pearson correlation) and applying soft thresh-holding to empathize the strongest correlations.…”

“…High soil total porosity might be due to high soil OM content, whereas low total porosity corresponds to the high bulk density values of the soil of farm fields. According to Brady et al [19], Parent [55], suggestions, normal porosity ranges from 47-51% and 51-55% for clay loam and clay texture soils, respectively. The mean value of soil total porosity recorded for soils of farm fields of the study area could provide good aeration for crop production and microorganisms in the study area.…”

“…Soil and organic matter are fractal objects [10] [11] that interact with each other [12]. Organic matter is a mixture of objects of various sizes and biochemical compositions [6] [13]. In batch reactions, surface area of particles and substrate reactivity per unit surface are enhanced by shredding and grinding, and by agitating the mixture [7].…”
