In fish of the family Cyprinidae extensive polymorphism and heterogeneity of serum transfemns were found. Ten variants of transfemns were detected in barbel, 9 in dace and bleak, 7 in chub and bream, 6 in rudd, 5 in roach, white bream, silver carp, big head and crucian carp, 3 in tench, and 2 variants in nase, ide and goldfish. All the variants observed bound radioactive iron. The phenotype patterns indicated a simple genetic determination, by a set of codominant alleles at one locus, and this even in tetraploid species. Transfemns of some species were partly isolated. The transferrins of all 22 species analysed were heterogeneous and homozygous phenotypes had l to 6 zones of various intensities, binding SgFe. In barbel both single-zone and two-zone variants were present and transferrins of roach had variable heterogeneity. Sialic acid was found only in transferrins of silver carp, big head and in the two-zone variants of barbel. The occurrence of phenotypes with single and double zones of transferrins in barbel indicates the possibility of genetic determination of the inability of single-zone variants to bind sialic acid.

Isoenzyme patterns and the polymorphism of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) were investigated in 3 fish species of family Cyprinidae, i.e. tench (Tinca tinca), crucian carp (Carasshs carassins) and carp (Cyprinus carpio). The isoenzyme patterns were tissue and species specific. In crucian carp subunits with different electrophoretic mobility are present, which are genetically controlled from the B1, BZ, A*, A? and C loci, while the set of loci in carp is B1, B?, A, C1 and C2 and in tench B, A, C. The locus B of LDH in tench, the locus B2 in crucian carp, and the loci Bl, C1 and Cc in carp are polymorphic and have two different alleles in each case. The polymorphism did not affect the total LDH activity in the tissues. All the populations investigated were in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. The genetic control of the polymorphism in B1 and C1 loci in carp was proved by test matings. The polymorphism in B loci tested in erythrocytes may be utilized as genetic markers in the fish breeding.

The distribution of dierent phenotypes of the complement component C3 and a possible correlation with body weight were investigated in ®ve Danish strains (A, C, D, E, J) of farmed trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss Walbaum). All strains showed the presence of the f1 and f2 alleles; two of these strains also expressed the s allele. Most common was the f1 allele (> 68%); rarest was the s allele (<9% or absent). In the J strain, a signi®cantly higher frequency of the f1 allele was observed. Only in the D strain was a linkage indicated between the mean values of body weight of trout and dierent C3 phenotypes (P 0.002); the mean body weight of individuals with the f1 phenotype was also lower than that of the f1/f2 and s/f1 phenotypes. This result, however, is not conclusive, as it was observed in only one of the ®ve strains and because the number of individuals in some of the phenotype groups was very small.The reactivity of monoclonal antibody Hyb106-1 that reacts with a carbohydrate epitope on the serum immunoglobulin molecule was also investigated in the ®ve rainbow trout strains. The percentage of positively reacting trout sera varied from 9% to 43%. In the D and the E strains, positive individuals showed a signi®cantly (P 0.036, resp. P 0.005) lower body weight than did the negative individuals.No linkage between the reactivity with monoclonal antibody Hyb106-1 and the f1 and f2 alleles of complement component C3 was observed. However, individuals that reacted negatively with the carbohydrate marker expressed only the s allele, possibly caused by a low number of samples expressing the s allele.
