Biochemical Significance of Matrix Gla Protein and Its Potential Use as a Marker in Clinical Biochemistry

Miloš Barna,
Jana Čepová,
Kateřina Dunovská
et al.

Abstract: The aim of this work was to present an overview on the biochemical significance of the matrix γ‑carboxyglutamate (Gla) protein (MGP). According to the literature, the MGP is associated with vascular, bone, and kidney metabolisms, as well asvitamin K levels. The relationship of MGP to Keutel's syndrome, Pseudoxanthoma elasticum, colitis, and dental calculus is described. The information published so far suggests that MGP protein levels could have potential as a biochemical marker in these serious diseases.
