Biocidal Coatings from Complexes of Carboxylated Latex Particles and a Linear Cationic Polymer

Abstract: A linear polycation, poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride), electrostatically interacts with anionic latex particles from a carboxylated butadiene–styrene copolymer in aqueous solution thus forming an interpolyelectrolyte complex. A mutual neutralization of oppositely charged latex and polycation groups occurs at W = latex/polycation = 50 wt/wt ratio. At W = 27, an ultimate polycation adsorption is reached, resulting in the formation of positive polycomplex particles, while at W ˂ 27, two-component systems ar… Show more

“…The demonstrated selective sensitivity of different groups of microorganisms to polyDADMAC is consistent with the literature data, in particular, characterizing its antimicrobial effect as part of an interpolyelectrolyte complex with anionic latex particles. 100 Thus, as a result of the experiments, the biocidal effect of LDPE films modified with polyDADMAC was reliably recorded in relation to different groups of microorganisms, which depended on the duration of cells incubation on the surface. The obtaining films can have a wide practical application as a packaging material or a material for food containers with antimicrobial properties.…”

“…Later, the contents of the coatings were washed with distilled water (200 μL), onto an agar substrate, where after 2 days a colony was formed from each surviving bacterial cell. 100 The number of grown colonies matching the number of surviving cells was counted and compared with the initial number of cells in the inoculated aliquot. Biological experiments were carried out in threefold repetition.…”

“…The quantitative assessment of antimicrobial properties of the polymer compositions was carried out via the determination of their minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) and minimum bactericidal concentrations (MBCs) [58,[63][64][65]. Various aliquots of 1 wt.% polymer solutions were added in the glass test-tubes with 2 mL M9 medium [66,67]. The tubes were inoculated (1% vol) with the microorganisms using 1-day cultures of the stationary growth phase and were placed on a shaker at 28 • C. After 2 days, the growth of the microorganisms was evaluated visually or after sieving on agarized medium.…”
