Biocontrol of aphids by the introduced Lysiphlebus testaceipes (Cress.) (Hym., Aphidiidae) in Mediterranean France

Abstract: Lysiphlebus testaceipes (Cresson) (= L. t.) has been introduced from Cuba (via Czechoslovakia) to Southern France in 1973/74 to control the exotic aphids Toxoptera aurantii (B.d.F.) and Aphis citricola v. d. G. on Citrus. Research until 1986 showed that L. t. had established over the whole of Mediterranean France (as well as Spain, Portugal, and most of Italy to Sicily). Apart of high effectiveness on the target species (incomplete parasitism on A. citricola) L.t. has become the predominant parasitoid of a num… Show more

“…Hymenopterous parasitoids of aphids have provided spectacular success in biological control (Starý et al 1988). The impact of a parasitoid on its host population greatly depends upon its ability to find and parasitise hosts and to increase offspring numbers in response to increasing host density (Waage & Hassell 1982;Mackauer 1983).…”

“…Aphidius ervi Haliday, 1834 (Hymenoptera: Aphidiidae) is a cosmopolitan, solitary, endophagous parasitoid (Marsh 1977) and a major biological control agent of several aphid species damaging economically important crops such as legumes and cereals (Powell 1982;Starý et al 1988). The impact of a parasitoid on its host population greatly depends upon its ability to find and parasitize hosts and to increase offspring numbers in response to increasing host density (Waage & Hassell 1982;Mackauer 1983).…”

“…In this thesis, I first tried to understand the poor biocontrol services provided by A. spiraecola parasitoids, despite the efforts carried out to introduce new parasitoids (Tremblay et al, 1983;Starý et al, 1988;Meliá, 1993;. According to molecular and taxonomic data, Michelena and Chapter V 169 Sanchís, 1997;Urbaneja et al, 2000; Hermoso de Mendoza et al, 2012;.…”
