Biocontrol of Carrot Disease-Causing Pathogens Using Essential Oils

Abstract: Diseases caused by fungal pathogens such as Alternaria spp. damage the commercial appearance of carrots or cause foliage diseases, resulting in significant yield losses each year and are a source of pre- and postharvest rots. European commission encourages the reduction of chemical pesticides. Therefore, the potential of essential oils for alternative plant protection is increasingly discussed. Furthermore, essential oils naturally produced by aromatic plants are rich in secondary metabolites, which possess se… Show more

“…It is well known that Western carrot cvs. have reduced genetic diversity [11,17] with increased desirable traits during domestication [8] and are highly susceptible to various pathogens [8,59]. This is also supported by our results because the root development and vascular tissue development utilizes higher photosynthates instead of diversion to other stress-responsive pathways, as confirmed in Eastern cv.…”

“…Many of these phytochemicals have beneficial effects on human health as well, effectively treating various diseases [ 10 ]. Additionally, extracts obtained from a broad spectrum of plants were proven to have inhibitory effects against horticultural fungal pathogens in vitro [ 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 ]. For example, different extracts of Hyssopus officinalis L. and Salvia officinalis L. were shown to be rich in bioactive compounds, which contribute to the anti-fungal effect [ 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 ].…”

“…Por esto, estrategias como "Farm to Fork" de la Unión Europea, buscan acelerar nuestra transición hacia un sistema alimentario sostenible. De acuerdo con esta estrategia "De la granja a la mesa" existe una urgente necesidad de reducir la dependencia de pesticidas y fertilizantes químicos (Chrapac ˇiene ˙ et al, 2021).…”
