Biodiesel Production from Bulk Frying Oil with Ultrasound Assisted

Abstract: The objective of this research is to optimize of biodiesel production with ultrasound assisted. Optimization was used central composite design methods. Biodiesel was produced from frying oil with KOH catalyst and ultrasonic assisted. The variables were investigated temperature, catalyst concentration and ratio of methanol to oil. Biodiesel was separated from reactant and impurities with decantation process and distillation process. The results of research obtained optimum conversion 85.95% in operation conditi… Show more

“…The sulphuric acid is used in esterification reaction in which free fatty acid (FFA) is reacted to methanol. The sodium hydroxide and potasium hydroxide are mostly used in transesterification reaction where triglyceride is reacted with methanol [1,2]. The disadvantages of utilization of homogeneous catalysts in biodiesel production are saponification reaction [1] and regeneration issue after the transesterification process is completed as well as producing toxic wastewater [3] and corosive in reactor [4].…”

“…Limestone contains a calcium carbonate and calcium hydroxide / Ca(OH) 2 [16]. If the calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ) and Ca(OH) 2 were calcined in high temperature, then they will decompose to CaO which is the main source of heterogeneous catalyst. CaO is a strong basic oxide which has high catalytic activity [12].…”

“…Process intensifications of biodiesel production have been investigated by previous researchers, such as homogenous catalyst transesterification and esterification [4], heterogeneous base-catalyst [5], enzymatic transesterification [6], non-catalyst supercritical transesterification [7], microwave-assisted transesterification [8], and ultrasound-assisted esterification [1,[9][10][11]. Although these intensifications could improve yield and efficiency, several drawbacks were discovered.…”

“…The use of non-catalytic supercritical transesterification has disadvantages in technical operation that may increase the cost of production [6]. Intensification to reduce processing time has also been attempted, using microwaves and ultrasound as power utilities [8][9][10][11]. It turned out that the yield of biodiesel produced by microwave-assisted transesterification was lower than by ultrasound-assisted production [10][11].…”
