Biodiversity conservation as infectious disease prevention: why a social-ecological perspective is essential

Abstract: Non technical summary Investing in stricter biodiversity conservation and wildlife protection to reduce the number of emerging diseases and, consequently, the risk of pandemics such as COVID-19, must integrate a social-ecological perspective. Biodiversity conservation, in order to be effective as disease prevention, requires consideration of people's needs, knowledge and institutions within their locally specific contexts. To meet this goal, future biodiversity research and conservation policy should apply six… Show more

“…While the relationship types outlined in the sections above were included (under slightly different definitions) in a previous typology, indifferent and ambivalent types had been omitted (Bhatia et al., 2020). However, they urgently warrant consideration for the management of entities considered invasive (Linders et al., 2021), overabundant (Martínez‐Jauregui et al., 2020), pests (van Eeden et al., 2019), vectors and spillover reservoirs (Schneider et al., 2021) or compromising the conservation of endangered species (Batavia, Nelson, et al., 2020). Reducing the abundance of such entities requires support for actions with negative impacts on them, also from individuals with a neutral or positive attitude towards those entities.…”

“…In response to COVID-19, Schneider and colleagues [80] outline 6 social-ecological principles specifically designed to shape future practices of coexistence of societies and nature to prevent future infectious diseases including (1) shifting the focus on relations between society and nature; (2) enabling coexistence of different social groups, but also human and nonhuman subjects; (3) defining and reflecting on limits, in terms of the spatial, temporal, social, and ecological scale; (4) dealing with complexity of social and natural entanglement requires acceptance of our limited degree of control; (5) strengthening resilience of SES; and ( 6) participation of all actors in these methodological principles.…”
