Ecological restoration requires a holistic view of the interconnectedness between degraded areas, remaining ecosystems, and the repercussions of land use and other socioeconomic costs. In this study, we analyze how biological priorities for restoration change when ecological, social, and economic feasibility are considered. A multi‐criteria approach was used to prioritize restoration areas, using the Mexican side of the transboundary Grijalva‐Usumacinta basin (78,831 km2) as a study model, one of Mexico's most important regions, thanks to its hydrology, biology, and social conditions. Fourteen indicators of biological value and feasibility for restoration were identified. The results showed that when considering only biological factors (B scenario), 9.35% of the basin area had high or very high priority for restoration within or near natural protected areas (NPAs). When including feasibility (B + F scenario), the area with high to very high priority values for restoration increased to 34.3%. This means that many feasible areas had medium or low biological priority for restoration, and consequently, in many cases, there is a tradeoff between the possible biological recovery versus viability derived mainly from socioeconomic factors. Without discerning where restoration can offer the most pronounced ecological and socioeconomic benefits, efforts risk being misdirected or squandered. This approach provides a suitability assessment useful for decision‐makers and stakeholders because it generates a more complete picture of opportunities and threats to make a final selection of priority areas for intervention.

En Tabasco se han reconocido 699 taxones algales dulceacuícolas, cifra que consideramos baja, dado que resguarda el mayor número de cuerpos de agua dulce del país y alberga la Reserva de la Biosfera Pantanos de Centla (RBPC), el humedal tropical más extenso, que por su compleja hidrología y biodiversidad es uno de los sitios más importantes de su tipo en Mesoamérica. El objetivo central de este estudio consistió en registrar y documentar las especies fitoplanctónicas de las lagunas El Viento y San Pedrito, localizadas al interior de la RBPC, durante 2 períodos, lluvias de norte (noviembre 2016) y secas (febrero 2017). Se documentaron 67 especies, 4 de ellas se registran para México por primera vez y 18 para la entidad. El 67% se presentan en sistemas acuáticos eutrofizados, con una forma de vida típicamente planctónica (73%). La cantidad y variedad de cuerpos acuáticos en la entidad, la ubicación de la RBPC y la influencia de la región hidrológica Grijalva-Usumacinta, hacen notable la gran diversidad de algas y de procariotas fotoautotróficos (Cyanoprokaryota).

BackgroundTolerance to the enrichment of ionic nitrogen (N) with ammonium (NH 4 ) and nitrate (NO 3 ) needs to be distinguished in a submerged grass ecotype-species of freshwater wetlands. Concentrations of total Nitrogen (TN: 500 to 2000 µgL -1 ) and three N sources (NS: NH 4 , NO 3 , 1:1 NH 4 :NO 3 ratio) in an overlaying aqueous phase, using local tap water as control (174 µgL -1 TN), were evaluated in rooted autotrophic juvenile Vallisneria americana established in vitro in two-phase culture medium. The treatments ranged from 7 to 111 µM TN. Phenotypes changes, pH and ionic strength in the aqueous phase were registered at 15 days. In addition, biomass of lyophilized leaf and root as well as N contents (gas and high-performance liquid chromatography) were analysed to estimate accumulations of N-NH 4 , N-NO 3 and N-NO 2 .ResultsAll individuals showed phenotypic similarities. Accumulation of N-NH 4 was discarded, but the accumulations of N-NO 3 and N-NO 2 in both tissues were significantly different (p<0.001 and 0.0001), revealing so much that the maximum cumulative responses coincided with a deficit of N as both showed a linear decrease in their cumulative capacity linked to an increase in micromolar TN. ConclusionsThe results provide direct evidence of the tolerance to N enrichment with three different N sources in the focal ecotype at the seedling stage, based mainly on its cumulative capacity of N-NO 3 and N-NO 2 under eutrophic conditions. The findings imply that NO 2 is a relevant ion in the tolerance to N enrichment in overlaying water with NH 4 and NO 3 ions.
