Biodiversity in Ethiopian linseed (Linum usitatissimum L.): molecular characterization of landraces and some wild species

Abstract: Molecular characterization of germplasm is important for sustainable exploitation of crops. DNA diversity was measured using inter-retrotransposon-amplified-polymorphism and inter-simple-sequence-repeat markers in 203 Ethiopian landraces and reference varieties of linseed (flax, Linum usitatissimum) and wild Linum species. Molecular diversity was high (PIC, 0.16; GD, 0.19) compared to other reports from the species. Genotyping separated reference from landrace accessions, and clustered landrace accessions from… Show more

“…Molecular marker-based diversity is more precise and economic as it allows breeders to select unrelated individuals among thousands of genotypes within a short period of time which in turn reduces field workload by evaluating only unrelated genotypes. Different molecular marker techniques such as RAPD, AFLP, ISSR, SSR and IRAP has been used to assess the genetic diversity of flax germplasm [16][17][18][19][20][21][22]. The availability of a flax reference genome [23] has created the opportunity of discovery and exploitation of SNP markers, which are abundant and well distributed throughout the genome.…”

“…Different marker systems, such as AFLP, RAPD, ISSR, IRAP, SSR, and SNPs, have been employed in linseed specifically for studying the genetic diversity (33,79,195,197,198,202,(220)(221)(222). The genetic diversity studies with sufficiently large germplasm accessions (>100) have been considered in this review.…”
