Biodiversity influences the effects of oil disturbance on coastal ecosystems

Abstract: Biodiversity can enhance the response of ecosystems to disturbance. However, whether diversity can reduce the ecological effect of human-induced novel and extreme disturbances is unclear. In April 2010, the Deepwater Horizon (DwH) platform exploded, allowing an uncontrolled release of crude oil into the northern Gulf of Mexico. Initial surveys following the spill found that ecological impacts on coastal ecosystems varied greatly across habitat-type and trophic group; however, to date, few studies have tested t… Show more

“…The authors recommend that the disc skimmer should for marine pollution non-persistent oils such as gasoline, light types of diesel, and kerosene. The disc skimmer, which is easy to maintain and handle, is not sensitive to small and solid contaminants such as plastic plugs and can also be used to collect smaller fragments of plastic [38]. The most significant disadvantage of disc skimmers is the weak efficiency in persistent oils such as crude oil and the sensitivity to ropes and river grasses due to constriction and discs.…”

“…Biodiversity is widely used to assess ecosystem state and as a proxy for resilience of communities to perturbation (Zerebecki et al 2022). Some aspects of diversity can now be modeled, including via macroecological relationships (Peck et al 2018).…”

“…Despite the difficulty of discerning the impacts to habitats and tracking the fate of dispersants, researchers have found that dispersants reduce biodiversity resistance and resilience, and increase oiled sedimentation, which reduces the rate of biodegradation (Zerebecki et al 2022;Khelifa et al 2008;Passow and Lee 2022). Biodegradation of dispersants is also limited when dispersant-treated oil becomes weathered, mixing with sand, which protects it from dissolution and biodegradation (White et al 2014).…”
