In this study, we examined the seeds of 7 Dactylorhiza taxa (D. nieschalkiorum and D. osmanica var. osmanica) of which 2 are endemic to Turkey (D. euxina var. euxina, D. iberica, D. romana subsp. romana, D. saccifera, D. urvilleana) in terms of morphological, micromorphological and morphometric properties. We analyzed the seeds using standard procedures of light microscopy and electron microscopy (SEM). The seeds collected from different localities were examined in terms of 22 characters, such as seed shape and size, length/width ratio, embryo volume, seed/embryo volume, percent air space, position of the embryo and seed surface features were analyzed. Furthermore, the morphometric measurements showed that some diagnostic characters could be important for these taxa. As a result of the study, the dendograms were formed based on the numerical analysis and important differences were determined in terms of examined characters among taxa. The characters of the seeds of genus Dactylorhiza are characteristic even in species level. The seed properties identified would help researchers on genus-related problems.

The choice of stress resistant and highly adaptable species is a fundamental step for landscaping and ornamental purposes in arid and coastal environments such as those in the Mediterranean basin. The genus Tamarix L. includes about 90 species with a high endurance of adversity. We investigated the water relations and photosynthetic response of Tamarix arborea (Sieb. ex Ehrenb.) Bge. var. arborea and T. parviflora DC. growing in an urban environment. Both species showed no evidence of drought or salt stress in summer, and appeared to follow two strategies with T. arborea var. arborea investing in high carbon gain at the beginning of the summer, and then reducing photosynthetic activity at the end of the season, and T. parviflora showing lower but constant levels of photosynthetic activity throughout the vegetative season. For landscaping and ornamental purposes, we suggest T. arborea var. arborea when a fast-growing, high-cover species is necessary, and T. parviflora when less-invasive species are required.

Widely distributed in arid and semiarid regions, phreatophytic roots extend into the saturated zone and extract water directly from groundwater. In this paper, we implemented a vegetation optimality model of root dynamics (VOM‐ROOT) in the Noah land surface model with multiparameterization options (Noah‐MP LSM) to model the extraction of groundwater through phreatophytic roots at a riparian site with a hyperarid climate (with precipitation of 35 mm/yr) in northwestern China. VOM‐ROOT numerically describes the natural optimization of the root profile in response to changes in subsurface water conditions. The coupled Noah‐MP/VOM‐ROOT model substantially improves the simulation of surface energy and water fluxes, particularly during the growing season, compared to the prescribed static root profile in the default Noah‐MP. In the coupled model, more roots are required to grow into the saturated zone to meet transpiration demand when the groundwater level declines over the growing season. The modeling results indicate that at the study site, the modeled annual transpiration is 472 mm, accounting for 92.3% of the total evapotranspiration. Direct root water uptake from the capillary fringe and groundwater, which is supplied by lateral groundwater flow, accounts for approximately 84% of the total transpiration. This study demonstrates the importance of implementing a dynamic root scheme in a land surface model for adequately simulating phreatophytic root water uptake and the associated latent heat flux.
