Bioefficacy of an Oil-Emulsion Formulation of Entomopathogenic Fungus, Metarhizium anisopliae against Adult Red Palm Weevil, Rhynchophorus ferrugineus

Abstract: The red palm weevil (RPW), Rhynchophorus ferrugineus, poses a severe threat to agro-industrial crops, particularly major cultivated palm species. Infestations result in economic losses due to reduced fruit quality and yield. The entomopathogenic fungus, Metarhizium anisopliae, has shown promise as a potential biocontrol agent against the RPW. However, the use of an emulsion formulation of M. anisopliae for managing this serious insect pest has yet to be fully explored. The oil-emulsion formulation containing t… Show more

“…These synergistic approaches could be broadly categorized into four aspects corresponding to EPF infection: 1) Artificially enhancing EPF attachment or penetration capability through various methods. For example, an oil-in-glycerol formulation enhances the lethal infection of M. anisopliae conidia to the Red Palm Weevil ( Rhynchophorus ferrugineus ) by promoting adhesion ( 189 ); 2) Suppressing or evading host insect immunity through RNAi or specific chemicals. For example, ingestion of bacteria expressing immune-suppressive double-stranded RNAs (dsRNAs) leads to significantly increased mortality in the leaf beetle Plagiodera versicolora following B. bassiana infection ( 207 ).…”

“…The fungal genus Metarhizium (Hypocreales; Clavicipitaceae) comprises a wide range of insect pathogens of high interest for fundamental research in both host-pathogen interaction and the development of microbial insecticides [1,2]. The findings that Metarhizium fungi infect and kill economically important insect pests [3][4][5][6][7], colonize the plant rhizosphere [8][9][10] and can be produced and formulated with comparative ease [11][12][13] have triggered the investigation of Metarhizium isolates in many parts of the world [14][15][16][17][18][19][20].…”
