Bioengineering Solution to Prevent Rainfall-Induced Slope Failures in Tropical Soil

Abstract: This paper presents test results of comprehensive laboratory and field-testing program efforts for the development of bioengineering solutions such as growing vegetation for protection of slopes from erosion and landslides in a tropical environmental setting. Saturated shear strength of soil was determined using direct shear tests and unsaturated soil properties, such as soil water retention curve (SWRC), were obtained using a computer-controlled hydraulic property analyzer (HYROP) system as well as a WP4C ins… Show more

“…Patil et al, 2021 carried out a transient seepage-coupled slope stability analysis under an extreme precipitation event and demonstrated that the slight increase in FOS that was brought about by matric suction induced by root water uptake (RWU) could play a significant role in maintaining the slope's stability during extreme storm events, particularly in situations where the FOS of the bare slope is close to one [40]. In another study, Patil et al, 2022 found that matric suction created within shallow depths as a result of root water uptake (RWU) contributes to the provision of a buffer that prevents slope failure during lower-precipitation occurrences, though this stabilization effect is no longer present during precipitation that lasts for a prolonged time [41]. However, the impact study of sunshine Vetiver on unsaturated soil properties in high plasticity expansive clay is still limited.…”

“…Soils on slopes in swelling soil areas are often in an alternating state of dryness and wetness under natural precipitation and evaporation conditions. Soils swell when they are wet and shrink when they are dry, making the expansion and contraction process and its resulting hazards are more obvious [2][3][4]. Soils are very sensitive to changes in water content due to the presence of clay minerals such as montmorillonite and illite.…”

“…Conversely, under heavy rainfall conditions, soil subjected to rainwater can experience erosion and damage caused by splashing and runoff, thereby affecting the stability of the slopes. In severe cases, this can result in catastrophic natural disasters such as landslides and mudflows, posing risks to human life and properties [ 4 , 5 ]. To mitigate the hazards associated with moisture-induced changes in clay, stabilizers are commonly used to modify its hydraulic properties.…”
