Bioerosion and availability of shelter for benthic reef organisms

Abstract: Bioerosion was examined in 5 different reef habitats on the northeast of St Croix, USVI, and the hypothesis tested that cavities provided by borers govern the numbers and body sizes of an important motile cryptobiont, stomatopod crustaceans Bioeroders excavated significant percentages of material from beachrock or dead coral substrates In the intertidal zone (0 m), fringing reef (-1 m), lagoonal patch reef (-3 m), and the back reef (-3 m) and fore reef (-12 m) of the offshore barrier reef. Mean volumes removed… Show more

“…Furthermore, the structure of intact frameworks is less conducive to the occupation of cryptofauna. Physical and biologically-mediated erosion creates shelters and cavities within which these diverse communities may live [27]. Finally, the high substrate mobility of rubble zones effectively limits the proliferation of space domineering competitors and therefore supports high diversity [28].…”

“…In these areas, structural relief provides habitat and shelter from predators, as well as more habitat space than the intact frameworks [27]. Undisturbed high-relief framework structures (LDF) directly below contiguous stands of high coral cover contained surprisingly low densities of cryptofauna, being no different than the more degraded and eroded low-relief framework structures.…”

“…Conversely. crevice-dwelling juvenile grouper may face a decline in the availability of crevices as they grow (Steger 1987, Moran & Reaka 1988), thereby creating a population bottleneck in certain nursery habitats (e.g. Caddy 1986).…”

“…Some species prefer to settle among algae, sea-grasses or mangrove roots, but rocky bottoms are mostly preferred. Holes in rock surfaces have been reported to be used by a wide variety of mobile organisms as a temporary refuge or as a more permanent microhabitat, examples being fish, crabs and stomatopods (Kotrschal, 1988;Moran and Reaka, 1988;Norman et al, 1994;Macpherson and Zika, 1999). Hole utilisation, although not used as the main microhabitat, has been reported for Panulirus versicolor, Panulirus longipes and Panulirus penicillatus (Yoshimura et al, 1994).…”
