Bioethanol Potential of Energy Sorghum Grown on Marginal and Arable Lands

Abstract: Field experiments were conducted in marginal lands, i.e., sub-humid climate and saline-land (SHS) and semi-arid climate and wasteland (SAW), to evaluate ethanol potential based on the biomass yield and chemical composition of biomass type (var. GN-2, GN-4, and GN-10) and sweet type (var. GT-3 and GT-7) hybrids of energy sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] in comparison with sub-humid climate and cropland (SHC) in northern China. Results showed that environment significantly (p < 0.05) influenced plant growth… Show more

“…The model representation for high‐yielding varieties and the yield response to extreme weather events need to be further improved to better represent new advancements in the genetic engineering. The average yield of 12.52.3+2.0 Mg ha −1 year −1 in the Southern states can produce ethanol yields up to around 2,856–3,920 L ha −1 year ‐1 (Tang, Li, Li, & Xie, 2018).…”

“…Sorghum has been cultivated since the dawn of agriculture and currently occupies an important place in the world grain market due to its wide adaptability, versatility and rusticity. This crop is widely used for animal feed; however, new research indicates its potential to be inserted in power generation in Brazil (Tang, Li, Li, & Xie, ). Individually, some American countries are prominent in sorghum production.…”
