Biofeedback Treatment of Paradoxical Vocal Fold Motion and Respiratory Distress in an Adolescent Girl

Abstract: In this investigation, we evaluated the effectiveness of surface electromyography (EMG) biofeedback to treat paradoxical vocal fold motion in a 16-year-old girl. EMG biofeedback training occurred once per week over the course of 10 weeks. In a changing criterion design, muscle tension showed systematic changes that corresponded with changes in the criterion. Overall, baseline muscle tension levels were reduced over 60%, with corresponding reductions in episodes of respiratory distress and chest pain. Subjectiv… Show more

“…Warnes et al ( 23 ) used electromyography (EMG) related biofeedback therapy for a patient with VCD who was not responding to breathing exercises taught by a speech therapist. Similar to the description of use of biofeedback by Earles et al, this therapy required 10 weekly sessions where the patient was taught how to reduce muscle tension in laryngeal muscles using EMG signals to reinforce relaxation behaviors.…”

“…Biofeedback involves placing the patient in a conditioning program to gain control over involuntary muscle contractions or spasms. It is a learned behavioral modification that can be both practiced in a controlled setting and implemented during an acute episode or in the daily routine to reduce symptoms (Warnes & Allen, 2005). The implementation of biofeedback entails measurement of surface skin temperature, lower skin conductance, and decreased muscle contraction during sessions (Earles et al, 2003).…”

“…Speech therapy helps resolve symptoms once they occur. Therapy techniques involve breathing and vocalization exercises to indirectly relax the laryngeal and oropharyngeal musculature, and to promote an open airway during breathing (1,(19)(20)(21). Laryngeal relaxation is established by maintaining continuous airflow through the glottis.…”
