“…For instance, DBM dysbiosis could be managed by antimicrobial photodynamic therapy, which can eliminate pathogens with no risk of the emergence of drug-resistant strains (56). DBM dysbiosis could also be countervailed with the use of nanoparticles that alters DBM composition by interfering in fundamental biofilm properties such as adhesion and quorum-sensing (57,58). These innovative approaches will be instrumental to evaluate whether early interventions to correct DBM dysbiosis can prevent aGVHD onset.…”

“…Clinically, basic periodontal treatment, periodontal surgery, and drug treatment (mostly antibiotics) are often used to improve pathogenic bacteria removal as well as periodontitis and peri-implantitis treatment [ 7 ]. However, traditional antibiotics are restricted by the induction of antibiotic resistance and their low efficiency to kill bacteria in biofilms, which imposes certain limitations on clinical applications [ 8 , 9 ]. Identifying a biological agent that does not produce bacterial resistance and inhibits biofilm formation is important.…”

“…Of particular interest is the antifungal activity of CNPs. Candida species cause various diseases of the oral cavity: caries, including in young children, and infections of the oropharyngeal mucosa [ 29 ]. C. glabrata is thought to have both innate and acquired resistance to antifungal drugs.…”

“…The antibacterial activity of nanodiamonds can be due to the negatively charged acid anhydride groups present on the surface [ 27 , 28 ]. Nanodiamonds are effective not only against planktonic cells, but also against biofilms [ 29 ]. For example, mannose-modified NDs have in particular shown a high potential in countering E. coli -biofilm formation [ 30 ].…”
