A thermophilic aerobic membrane reactor (TAMR) treating high-strength COD liquid wastes was submitted to an integrated investigation, with the aim of characterizing the biomass and its rheological behaviour. These processes are still scarcely adopted, also because the knowledge of their biology as well as of the physical-chemical properties of the sludge needs to be improved. In this paper, samples of mixed liquor were taken from a TAMR and submitted to fluorescent in situ hybridization for the identification and quantification of main bacterial groups. Measurements were also targeted at flocs features, filamentous bacteria, and microfauna, in order to characterize the sludge. The studied rheological properties were selected as they influence significantly the performances of membrane bioreactors (MBR) and, in particular, of the TAMR systems that operate under thermophilic conditions (i.e., around 50 ∘ C) with high MLSS concentrations (up to 200 gTS L −1 ). The proper description of the rheological behaviour of sludge represents a useful and fundamental aspect that allows characterizing the hydrodynamics of sludge suspension devoted to the optimization of the related processes. Therefore, in this study, the effects on the sludge rheology produced by the biomass concentration, pH, temperature, and aeration were analysed.

In-mill thermophilic treatment of individual wastewater streams to achieve water system closure has received much attention in pulp and paper mills. Aerobic biological treatment of thermomechanical pulping (TMP) condensate was conducted using thermophilic (55 °C) and mesophilic (35 °C) sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) for a period of 143 days at a cyclic time of 6, 8 and 12 h. A soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) removal efficiency of 77 to 91% was achieved, given an organic loading rate of 0.7-1.3 kg/m³ d. The COD removal efficiency of the thermophilic SBR was slightly lower than that of the mesophilic SBR. Majority of the soluble COD was removed by biodegradation with a small portion (9-13%) of soluble COD stripped by aeration. The settleability (sludge volume index) and the flocculating ability (effluent suspended solids) of thermophilic sludge were comparable to or slightly poorer than that of the mesophilic sludge. The level of filaments in thermophilic sludge was usually higher than that in mesophilic sludge. The results of the study indicate that both thermophilic and mesophilic SBRs can be successfully operated for in-mill treatment of TMP condensate. The treated effluent has the potential for subsequent reuse in the mill.

The effects of chitosan characteristics (i.e., degree of deacetylation [DD] and molecular weight) and environmental conditions (i.e., ionic strength and pH) on the flocculation of anaerobic sludge were investigated. The results showed that chitosan enhanced the flocculation of sludge, and the flocculation efficiency depended on both the degree of deacetylation and molecular weight. Chitosan with 85%DD was more effective than that with 70%DD, as the former required a lower dose to obtain 90% flocculation at all studied pH values. In addition, low molecular weight chitosan enhanced the flocculation better than high molecular weight chitosan. The increase in ionic strength (up to 0.1 M) of the suspension helped reduce restabilization that occurred when chitosan was overdosed. In general, chitosan has potential to be used as an effective cationic bioflocculant, which is able to function either in acidic or neutral conditions, and very small amounts of chitosan (less than 4 mg/g dried sludge) are required.
