Biofunctional Constituents from Liriodendron tulipifera with Antioxidants and Anti-Melanogenic Properties

Abstract: From the stems of Liriodendron tulipifera, seventeen known compounds have been extracted, isolated and purified. By using spectroscopic analysis, the structures of these pure constituents were determined as three lignans, four steroids and ten benzenoids. Identified compounds were screened for antioxidant abilities using: 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazul (DPPH) and 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) scavenging free radical activity assays; metal chelating power test; and ferric reducing… Show more

“…The most important pigment determining human skin color is melanin. Melanogenesis suppressors are useful as therapeutics for hyper-pigmentation and have application in the cosmetic industry [ 7 , 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 , 24 , 25 , 26 ]. The purpose of this study was to identify novel natural and potent inhibitors of melanin production.…”

“…Skin aging can briefly be divided into three categories: ROS, decreasing ability of cells to replicate, and degradation of ECM. Reactive oxygen species are usually produced as side products of aerobic metabolism in the mitochondria, causing intrinsic aging . Cellular senescence is the decrease of cell replication ability with time, and often occurs in aged skin.…”

“…Reactive oxygen species are usually produced as side products of aerobic metabolism in the mitochondria, causing intrinsic aging. 6 Cellular senescence is the decrease of cell replication ability with time, and often occurs in aged skin. With time, the increased expression of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP), which degrades collagen in ECM, has been shown in senescent fibroblasts.…”
