Biogas/Biomethane Quality and Requirements for Combined Heat and Power (CHP) Units/Gas Grids with a Special Focus on Siloxanes-a Short Review

Abstract: The presence of siloxanes in biogas and biomethane is a major barrier to use them as renewable energy sources in Combined Heat and Power (CHP) units and national grids systems. Siloxanes in the shape of methyl siloxanes (incl. L2, L3, L4, D3, D4, D5, D6), Trimethylsilanol (TMSOH), as well as other contaminants such as H2S, NH3, relative Humidity (rH), halogenated compounds (including organic chlorine and fluorine), and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) presented in biogas upgraded to biomethane quality are det… Show more

“…et al, in biogas, the siloxanes concentration is generally between 0 and 40 mg/m 3 [ 26 ] even if in other studies, their concentrations are estimated to beabout 60 mg/m 3 [ 11 , 27 ]. However, in accordance with Piechota [ 28 ], the limit of silicon content (Si) for biogas used in the CHP units is <2 mg/m 3 and for VMS in biomethane injected to gas grids is 0.05 ± 0.02 mg/m 3 . At present, there is no standard method for the analysis of volatile siloxanes in a gaseous matrix [ 18 ].…”

“…Biogas has undesirable impurities in its composition, such as carbon dioxide, water vapor, hydrogen sulfide, siloxanes, nitrogen, ammonia, oxygen, and volatile organic compounds [18]. The presence of these interferents causes corrosion in engines and other components during energy conversion, which reduces fuel quality [19,20]. One of the alternatives to overcome this scenario is biogas cleaning and purification.…”

“…2023, 13, 7802 2 of 14 characteristics that require specific attention. One of the first steps to assess the viability of the implementation of technology based on gas turbines is to analyze their behavior when faced with new fuels [8], considering that determination methods for contaminants such as siloxane have been developed [9]. A low-cost process for emission abatement of biogas internal combustion engines has been developed, and this should be considered [10].…”
