“…The apparent relatively low level of intraspecific diversity observed for the Apulian Q. pubescens populations could be addressed to their marginal geographical position not only in the Italian Peninsula but also in the central Mediterranean context. In terms of biological conservation of deciduous oak forests the Apulia region is particularly exposed to environmental risks due to climate change drying effects which overlap a bioclimatic pattern dominated by the Thermo-Mediterranean thermotype the latter having in the Mediterranean maquis the main type of potential vegetation (Rivas-Martínez et al 2004, Ladisa et al 2012. Threats to pubescent oak woods are further increasing in many localities that are experiencing greater aridity and water deficiency due to the overexploitation of water reserves resulting from the ever increasing consumption for agricultural purposes and by tourist settlements.…”

“…From a biogeographic viewpoint, the study area is included in the Epiro-Dalmatian sector of the Adriatic province (Rivas-Martínez et al, 2004). The Neretva River delta consists of numerous channels that empty into the Eastern Adriatic Sea and several lakes, each of which is a karstic crypto-depression.…”

“…The main aims of this study were to identify the fundamental factors driving the distribution of Spanish beech forests and to model their habitat suitability under both current conditions and a future climate projection. To carry out this study, we used Species Distribution Models incorporating as newness the last approaches in Bioclimatology (Rivas-Martínez et al 2011, 2017a and Phytogeography (Rivas-Martínez et al 2014, 2017b).…”
