Biogeography of symbiotic and other endophytic bacteria isolated from medicinal Glycyrrhiza species in China

Abstract: A total of 159 endophytic bacteria were isolated from surface-sterilized root nodules of wild perennial Glycyrrhiza legumes growing on 40 sites in central and northwestern China. Amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) genomic fingerprinting and sequencing of partial 16S rRNA genes revealed that the collection mainly consisted of Mesorhizobium, Rhizobium, Sinorhizobium, Agrobacterium and Paenibacillus species. Based on symbiotic properties with the legume hosts Glycyrrhiza uralensis and Glycyrrhiza glabr… Show more

“…Mesorhizobia show a high variability and capacity to adapt to local and extreme edaphic conditions that are site specific. This agrees with data revealing taxon-area biogeography within mesorhizobia symbiotic to, for instance, chickpea (54) and liquorice (55) legumes, as well as extensive species diversification with the root-nodulating members of the genus Mesorhizobium. Therefore, to remediate metal contamination, this work suggests that native plants and microorganisms that are better adapted to local pedoclimatic conditions should be used in phytostabilization strategies based on Mesorhizobium-legume interactions.…”

“…Our results from clonal inoculations corroborate the results from previous work, which found no effect of nonnodulating strains on legume host growth in isolation (14,25,45). However, under parameters that model relative abundances of nonnodulating strains within the rhizosphere, our data set revealed substantial costs to host growth and symbiont fitness in both host populations examined (except for total nodule biomass at BMR) ( Fig.…”
