Biodiversitas 22: 1405-1414. In Indonesia, soybean is the third most important commodity after rice and corn. Cultivation technique such as planting hedgerows was expected to attract and retain natural enemies of pest predators. This study was conducted to determine the phytophagous insects and predatory arthropods species in soybean (Glycine max L.) and zinnia (Zinnia sp., hybrids) plants as refugia. This study utilized three methods i.e., visual observation, pitfall trap, net-trap in both soybean and zinnia planting areas. All collected insects were carried to the laboratory for observation and identification using insect determination key book. Insect identification was based on their morphological characteristics. The results study showed that phytophagous and predatory arthropods were found in both soybean and zinnia plantations in Agro-Techno Center (ATC), Sriwijaya University, Indonesia. There were 11 species of phytophagous and 5 species of entomophagous insects identified at soybean cultivation. Meanwhile, 5 species of phytophagous and 9 species of predatory arthropods including five spider species found, namely Pardosa distincta, Oxyopes javanus, Lycosa pseudomonas, Pardosa sp. and Drapetisca socialis at zinnia cultivation area. However, chi-square analysis (at alpha 0.05), confirmed that there was no significant difference between predatory arthropods in soybean and Zinnia the results indicate that soybean is might be suitable to be planted as refugia for predatory arthropods.

Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR) applied to different plants may suppress pests population developments. This research was to study the capability of a commercial PGPR product contained Bacillus polymyxa and Pseudomonas fluorescens in suppressing population developments of Aphis glycines Matsumura (Hemiptera: Aphididae). The biology and demographic statistics of A. glycines reared on soybean with and without the PGPR applications were compared. The PGPR suspensions of 5 g formulation per liter water were used to soak soybean seed for 15 minutes and to water soybean plant 2 weeks after transplanting. Cohorts of 65 first instar A. glycines of each treatment were observed daily and individual mortality, molting, and fecundity were recorded until the last individual dead. Second instar stadium of A. glycines reared on treated plant lasted longer than those reared on untreated plant, i.e. 1.4 and 1.1 days, respectively. These resulted on a longer life cycle for A. glycines reared on treated plant than on untreated plant, i.e. 4.9 and 4.5 days, respectively. In turn, it caused the A. glycines population to experienceslower growth on treated plants than on untreated plants. The values of A. glycines GRR, Ro, rm, T and DT on treated plants were 71.834, 57.780, 0.557, 7.287 and 1.245, consecutively; whilst that of untreated plants were 104.861, 63.326, 0.586, 7.084 and 1.184, respectively.

The use of predators in biological control has been widely known to reduce pest populations. The research aim is to determine the biology and preying abilities ladybird beetle, a species of family Coccinellidae named Coccinella transversalis Fabricius which can be used to mass rearing on laboratory for augmentation and conservation purpose. This study directed at research facility at Methodist University of Indonesia with descriptive methods. Samples collecting from horticultural cultivation at Karo District, then kept in maintenance jar with substitute food and real food Myzuz persicae as standard mass rearing technique for the coccinellid. The results showed that egg incubation was 3.2±0.76 days. There are four instars of larval with lifetime 2.67±0.20 days, 2.87±0.26 days, 2.91±0.53 and 3.42±0.75 days respectively. Prepupae was 1.62±0.56 days and pupae was 3.11±0.81 days. Life period of female was 35.05±3.80 days and male 25.75±3.14 days. The female potential produce egg was 118.4±20.14 eggs and percentage of egg hatching 85.0±6.37%. The survival rate from larvae to imago was 48.8±5.84%, which means half of the larvae succeeded becoming an imago. Preying abilities for aphid at larva instar I until instar IV, female and male were 24.55±3.28, 44.55±6.63, 89.90±13.41, 174.50±27.7, 973.67±29.21 and 786.31±14.77 aphids respectively.
