Biological Activities of Snowdrop (Galanthus spp., Family Amaryllidaceae)

Abstract: Snowdrop is an iconic early spring flowering plant of the genus Galanthus (Amaryllidaceae). Galanthus species (Galanthus spp.) are economically important plants as ornaments. Galanthus spp has gained significance scientific and commercial interest due to the discovery of Galanthamine as symptomatic treatment drug for Alzhiermer disease. This review aims to discuss the bioactivities of Galanthus spp including anticholinesterase, antimicrobial, antioxidant and anticancer potential of the extracts and chemical co… Show more

“…Antioxidants play an important role in the promotion of cardiovascular health since oxidative stress that inflicts the myocardium can be associated with the incidence of atherosclerosis, which increases the risk of coronary artery disease [ 100 , 101 ]. C. sativum has been demonstrated in many studies to possess a pronounced antioxidant activity, and this is mainly due to the activity of polyphenols, vitamins, and sterol constituents of coriander [ 78 , 89 , 90 ].…”

“…It exhibits tenfold greater affinity for brain AChE than for the peripheral one although it is a weak inhibitor of AChE. Galantamine is a natural alkaloid isolated from the flowers of Galanthus nivalis and some other varieties of the family Amaryllidaceae (Kong et al., 2020). It is a selective and reversible inhibitor of AChE.…”
