Biological Activities Underlying the Therapeutic Effect of Quercetin on Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Abstract: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic autoimmune disorder stemming from unrestrained immune activation and subsequent destruction of colon tissue. Genetic susceptibility, microbiota remodeling, and environmental cues are involved in IBD pathogenesis. Up to now, there are limited treatment options for IBD, so better therapies for IBD are eagerly needed. The therapeutic effects of naturally occurring compounds have been extensively investigated, among which quercetin becomes an attractive candidate owing… Show more

“…Quercetin has been shown to have excellent modulation potential on bacteria in many types of diseases, including neurodegenerative disease, metabolic disease, and IBD [ 89 , 90 , 91 , 92 ]. As an important constituent of CHM-derived polyphenols, quercetin prevents the onset of IBD by inhibiting oxidative stress and inflammation, in which gut bacteria are indispensable players.…”

“…Kaempferol plays an anti-inflammatory role, and oral kaempferol can inhibit the production of airway secretions and alleviate airway inflammation in asthmatic mice [ 37 ]. The aforementioned study also showed that quercetin and kaempferol, both of which are natural flavonoids, have antiallergic effects and can modulate changes in the intestinal flora, enhance intestinal microbial diversity, and increase F/B ratio, especially the relative abundance of the Bacteroides [ 38 , 39 ]. In the experiment, we found that the mice in the drug intervention group were more active behaviorally, and the phenomenon of ear scratching and nose scratching was relatively reduced.…”

“…In human blood, Que is mostly found in its glycosidic type [60]. According to assessments, Que has a half-life of 15 to 28 h [61,62]. Approximately 3.1% of Que is metabolized by the liver after oral ingestion, with around 93.3% being lost in the colon [63].…”
