Biological activity of the essential oils from Cinnamodendron dinisii and Siparuna guianensis

Abstract: This study had analyzed the antibacterial, antifungal and trypanocidal activity of the essential oils from Cinnamodendron dinisii Schwacke (Canellaceae) and Siparuna guianensis Aublet (Siparunaceae). The essential oils were obtained from fresh leaves by hydrodistillation, using a modified Clevenger apparatus. Chemical analysis by gas-liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS) showed that these essential oils are rich in monoterpene and sesquiterpene hydrocarbons. Activity against the pathogenic… Show more

“…The percentage of viable cells was determined by the equation [25]:Where %V is the percentage of viable cells, Fc: control fluorescence units; Fa: fluorescence units emitted by the analyzed samples (with inhibitor). The selectivity index (SI) was calculated by dividing CC 50 for the IC 50 .…”

“…Other ethnobotanical studies have revealed the traditional use of this plant for combating sinuses, headaches, migraines, and body aches, acting as an analgesic and anti-inflammatory agent (Valentini et al, 2010a;Andrade et al, 2015). It has also been reported to be used for fluctuation of consciousness between hypoactive and hyperactive states, neck pains, muscle strains, fears, vomiting, and seizures (Pagania et al, 2017).…”

“…The plant has also been evaluated for its activity against pathological bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Listeria monocytogenes, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella choleraesuis and Staphylococcus aureus; against the filamentous fungi such as Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus carbonarius, and Penicillium commune; and against the epimastigotes of Trypanosoma cruzi (Andrade et al, 2015). It has also been evaluated for its activity against the promastigotes of Leishmania amazonensis (Andrade et al, 2016) and as a repellent (Aguiar et al, 2015).…”

“…It´s a shrub that grows in the Cerrado and the aromatic leaves of S. guianensis are its largest reservoirs of essential oils and other chemical compounds of biological interest, such as flavonoids, tannins and terpenoids. In addition, the medicinal biomass (raw material) of the species has not been quantified, and there are few reports in the literature (Montanari, 2010;Valentini et al, 2010;Andrade et al, 2015) related to its potential antimicrobial activity, and no records of this approach in Tocantins State (277,720.520 km²), Brazil. In a recent study by Aguiar et al (2015), demonstrated highly toxic of essential oil of the S. guianensis against Aedes aegypti and Culex quinquefasciatus, showing potential for use as a natural insecticide against mosquitoes.…”

“…The medicinal species richness of the Cerrado is explained by the morphological characteristics of plants, which includes xylopodia and thick barks that accumulate reserves and frequently have active substances of pharmacological interest (Silva et al, 2010), including antibacterial and antifungal action (Pinhol et al, 2012;Silva et al, 2012;Andrade et al, 2015).…”
