Biological Activity of Volatiles from Marine and Terrestrial Bacteria

Abstract: The antiproliferative activity of 52 volatile compounds released from bacteria was investigated in agar diffusion assays against medically important microorganisms and mouse fibroblasts. Furthermore, the activity of these compounds to interfere with the quorum-sensing-systems was tested with two different reporter strains. While some of the compounds specific to certain bacteria showed some activity in the antiproliferative assay, the compounds common to many bacteria were mostly inactive. In contrast, some of… Show more

“…Mangrove wetland ecosystems have proven to be a rich source of extremely potent antimicrobial compounds (Zhang et al, 2005), including those with interesting biological and pharmacological activities (Schulz et al, 2010). Marine microbial species live in stressful habitats, under extreme temperature and high-pressure conditions.…”

“…Finally, the reaction was performed with aliphatic propylamine, which yields amide 10 in moderate yield and excellent ee (entry 7). 23 In addition, this method has been employed to obtain the biologically active amide 11 24 with 40% yield and 98% ee in a one pot two step synthesis starting from commercially available materials (entry 8).…”

“…Lots of these antagonists were found in the marine environment, which covers more than 70% of the world's surface. Indeed, marine environment has proven to be a rich source of extremely potent compounds (Zhang et al, 2005), including those with interesting biological and pharmacological activities (Schulz et al, 2010). Marine species live in a stressful habitat, under cold, lightless and high-pressure conditions.…”
