Biological and Nonbiological Antioxidant Activity of Some Essential Oils

Abstract: Fifteen essential oils, four essential oil fractions, and three pure compounds (thymol, carvacrol, and eugenol), characterized by gas chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, were investigated for biological and nonbiological antioxidant activity. Clove oil and eugenol showed strong DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) free-radical scavenging activity (IC50 = 13.2 μg/mL and 11.7 μg/mL, respectively) and powerfully inhibited reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in human neutrophils stimulate… Show more

“…Thymol (250 and 500 μM) strongly inhibited nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate reduced (NADPH)-cytochrome-c reductase mediated lipid peroxidation isolated from detergent solubilized liver microsomes of rats (Kamataki et al, 1978). Thymol attenuated the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and showed myeloperoxidase inhibitory activity in human neutrophils (Perez-Roses et al, 2016). …”

“…Nutmeg oil diminished chronic inflammation and pain through the inhibition of COX-2 expression and substance P release in vivo [16]. In another study, nutmeg oil suppressed reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in human neutrophils stimulated by PMA (phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate) [17] and mildly inhibited phagocytosis in human neutrophils [18]. However, there is no published research on the effect of nutmeg seed essential oil on virus-triggered inflammatory response.…”

“…Some studies point out that these diseases may be consequences of damages caused by free radicals, besides oxygen and reactive nitrogen species that act as mediators of inflammation as messenger molecules. This shows that essential oils can also act as an anti-inflammatory agent [31][32][33].…”
