Biological Functions of Diallyl Disulfide, a Garlic-Derived Natural Organic Sulfur Compound

Abstract: Garlic is widely accepted as a functional food and an excellent source of pharmacologically active ingredients. Diallyl disulfide (DADS), a major bioactive component of garlic, has several beneficial biological functions, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, cardiovascular protective, neuroprotective, and anticancer activities. This review systematically evaluated the biological functions of DADS and discussed the underlying molecular mechanisms of these functions. We hope that this review … Show more

“…This compound (furfural) was also active against Salmonella bacteria with an antimicrobial zone less than 15 mm at concentrations ranging from 0.35 to 1.4 µM, and MIC/MBC values of about 0.029 µM and 0.121 µM, respectively [50]. In addition, the identified sulfur compounds diallyl disulfide and diallyl trisulfide are known to be potent phytoconstituents for the prevention and treatment of several human diseases, such as endocrine system diseases, cardiovascular diseases, neurological diseases, infectious diseases, and cancerous diseases [51][52][53][54].…”

“…Experimental animal studies have shown that specific sulfur-containing compounds can chemically suppress carcinogenesis in different organs ( Kim et al, 2014 ). Diallyl disulfide (DADS), a compound composed of two allyl groups connected by two sulfur atoms, is a vital organosulfur compound found in garlic ( De Greef et al, 2021 ; He et al, 2021 ; Song et al, 2021 ). DADS is produced during the decomposition of allicin, and there have been many detailed studies regarding its medicinal applications ( Liang et al, 2015 ).…”

“…Naturally occurring OSCs are able to exert beneficial effects in inflammatory and pain processes, similarly to the biological actions of H 2 S [ 10 , 15 , 30 ]. Garlic—representing the most important member of the Allium family of plants—is regarded one of the richest vegetable in OSCs [ 33 ].…”

“…Moreover, it is also stable and can be regarded as a slow-release H 2 S donor [ 13 ]. Regarding the biological functions, it has been shown to exert a number of beneficial effects, e.g., anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antinociceptive, and neuroprotective effects, among others [ 14 , 15 ]. In animal experiments, orally or intraperitoneally administered DADS attenuated traumatic neuropathic and chronic inflammatory pain [ 16 , 17 ].…”
