Biological links in periodontitis and rheumatoid arthritis: Discovery via text‐mining PubMed abstracts

Abstract: Background and Objective Primary research concerning molecular pathways that link rheumatoid arthritis with periodontitis is limited. Biomedical literature data mining can offer insights into putative linkage mechanisms toward hypothesis development, based on information discovery. The aim of this study was to explore potential Periodontitis‐Rheumatoid Arthritis biological links by analysing “overlapping” genes reported in biomedical abstracts. Material and Methods PubMed abstracts for terms: (a) “Periodontiti… Show more

“…For the purpose of data extraction, the metadata and abstract of each publication returned from our search were collected in a single corpus and subjected to text-mining using the R packages RISmed ( 17 ) and Pubmed.mineR ( 18 ). The publications returned were analyzed in R to identify the cancer types/sites associated with each publication, as described by Acharya et al ( 19 ). Furthermore, the R package “PubmedmineR” was used for obtaining the names and frequency of occurrence of genes denoted in “Human Genome Nomenclature Committee” (HGNC) symbols ( 20 ).…”

“…RA is a systemic autoimmune disease characterized by chronic inflammation of the joints, with subsequent cartilage and bone destruction involving massive infiltration of neutrophils mediated by cytokines such as TNF‐α and IL‐17. RA and periodontitis share similar clinical and pathologic features 62 . The prevalence of RA is much higher in patients with periodontitis than in those without periodontitis, and the severity of arthritis and periodontitis was shown to be positively correlated 63 …”

“…Conversely, a mouth with chronic infections, in my opinion, cannot/should not be considered healthy even if it is able to perform its function adequately. This is because chronic bacterial infections of the mouth are very well reported to correlate with numerous diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, Alzheimer's disease, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases (Acharya et al 2019;Kubota et al 2014;Sochocka et al 2017;Sfyocras et al 2012;Söder & Yakob 2005). Furthermore, infections of the mouth have been reported to correlate with a reduction of lifespan in the elderly, possibly by aggravating other pathological conditions in the body (Söder et al 2007).…”
