Biological Markers of External and Internal Exposure in Shelter Construction Workers: A 13-Year Experience

Abstract: This study confirms the presence of radiation-induced changes in gene regulation of cell proliferation, telomere function and apoptosis in radiation workers exposed to external and internal exposure at doses above professional limits and increase of compensatory changes.

“…Changes in the transcription activity of genes of immune surveillance have been earlier registered in other groups of exposed individuals. For example, excessive expression of immune surveillance and apoptosis genes was observed in persons with cumulative doses of 0.1-113.35 mGy due to trans-uranium radionuclides five years after the onset of exposure (Bazyka et al, 2018). Findings of the study of the gene expression in the Chernobyl Nuclear Plant clean-up workers also demonstrate modulation of activity of more than 100 genes, including genes of cytokines and immune response, in persons with exposure doses > 400 mGy 11-12 years after the onset of radiation exposure (Albanese et al, 2007).…”

“…As radiation accidents are known to be rare events, availability of human biological samples is even rarer. In this context, Bazyka and coworkers reported on promising GE dose-response relationships after irradiation in Chernobyl clean-up workers (Ilienko et al 2018;Ilienko et al 2020), and staff of the "Shelter" and exclusion zone (Bazyka et al 2018;Bazyka et al 2020).…”
