Background Glycyrrhiza glabra ( G. glabra ), known as liquorice root is one such herbal remedy that has been shown to have immense potential in the treatment of orofacial diseases. Aim To evaluate the remineralizing potential of liquorice extract on initial enamel carious lesions. Materials and methods An in vitro and in vivo study was conducted, wherein the sound-extracted human premolars were sectioned longitudinally and into enamel blocks of size 4 × 4 mm. Enamel blocks were demineralized to produce artificial carious lesions. In vitro study, the demineralized enamel block was exposed to artificial saliva for 5 minutes and artificial saliva containing liquorice for 4 minutes 14 times in a sequential manner. An in vivo study was carried out on six volunteers aged between 6 and 12 years. The demineralized enamel block was inserted into the 5 × 5 mm window created on the full palatal coverage appliance. Patients were given commercially available liquorice candies (Ricola) to consume for 7 days twice daily. The remineralization potential of liquorice on demineralized enamel block was assessed using confocal microscopy analysis. Results Liquorice extract containing candies showed visual remineralization of the demineralized area on the enamel surface through confocal images. Objetivo: Reportar el tratamiento rehabilitador en el sector anterosuperior, mediante la colocación de pernos biológicos, en un paciente de 4 años. Introducción: La organización mundial de la salud sustenta que la mayoría de afecciones de salud bucal son prevenibles en gran medida y pueden tratarse desde sus etapas iniciales para evitar complicaciones como el dolor al masticar, dormir y sobre todo que esta buena condición pueda cumplir con sus funciones básicas como la deglución, fonación y respiración. La caries dental no tratada es la afección con mayor prevalencia a nivel mundial y la caries de tempana infancia constituye un problema de salud pública al no ser tratada provocando grandes pérdidas de estructura dentaria involucrando en el ámbito estético y alteraciones neuromusculares. Dentro de las opciones de tratamiento más conservadora para piezas altamente destruidas y con material biológico se encuentran los pernos biológicos que presentan alta biocompatibilidad y adhesión a la estructura dentaria. Presentación de caso clínico: Paciente masculino de 4 años sin antecedentes médicos presenta caries de temprana infancia en las piezas anterosuperiores 5.1 y 6.1 con alta destrucción coronaria por lesión cariosa avanzada, como plan de tratamiento se decide la confección para la colocación de pernos biológicos y con esto rehabilitar las piezas afectadas. Discusión: Las lesiones cariosas son una de las enfermedades más comunes en la infancia, siendo una condición que perjudica de manera integral el desarrollo del niño y llegando a provocar problemas infecciosos, Durán et al menciona que está relacionada la negligencia del tutor con la aparición de CTI. Aquino et al habla acerca de la importancia de las piezas deciduas ya que es una época decisiva para el desarrollo motor oral sin embrago Indira et al menciona que la odontología pediátrica ofrece diversidad en tratamientos restauradores para piezas con gran pérdida de estructura. Tomoko et al menciona que los pernos biológicos presentan una perfecta adaptación, preservación y retención mecánica. Conclusión: El uso de pernos biológicos intraradiculares permitieron la adecuada restauración permitiendo devolver al paciente la estética y sobre todo la funcionalidad con la permanencia del poco remanente de los órganos dentales afectados, se logró proporcionar al paciente un buen desenvolvimiento en deglución, fonación y tambien se logra estabilizar la parte psíquico-emocional dando la posibilidad de una mejor convivencia propia y social.

A bstract Background To widen the treatment option of primary teeth with mutilated crown tooth structure but having more than two-thirds of root structure were restored by using natural tooth crowns with the help of adhesive materials. Aim and objective To restore the grossly decayed primary molars with biological crowns and to evaluate them for longevity, change in color, occlusal wear, marginal integrity, and patient/parent acceptance. Materials and methods Twenty primary molars from 6 to 10 years old children were restored with biological crowns (extracted/exfoliated tooth crowns) and follow-up was done till 12 months. Data tabulated and results were statistically analyzed using Kaplan–Meier survival analysis. The statistical software SPSS 19.0 was used. Results 89.47% of biological restorations survived successfully till 12 months follow-up period. No occlusal wear was found in any of the samples, a breach in marginal integrity was seen only in 16.6% of cases, and only 5.5% of biological crowns showed discoloration (darker) at 12 months intervals. 65.00% of patients well accepted the treatment and showed satisfaction while 20.0% of patients remained neutral. Only 15% of patients experienced dissatisfaction at the end of the study. Conclusion Biological restorations proved to be a viable alternative for the restoration of grossly mutilated primary molars.
