As part of an environmental risk assessment study of exotic natural enemies used in inundative biological control, life-history characteristics of Harmonia axyridis (Pallas), Hippodamia variegata (Goeze) and Adalia bipunctata (L.) (Col., Coccinellidae) were quantified under laboratory conditions at 25°C on Myzus persicae (Sulzer) as prey. Comparative studies showed significant differences among pre-adult development times: H. axyridis developed slower ( X ¼ 19.8 days) than H. variegata ( X ¼ 18.1 days) and A. bipunctata ( X ¼ 18.4 days). Differences were also evident in the duration of egg, larval and pupal stages. No measurable differences among the three species were found for fecundity, oviposition rate and adult longevity. Harmonia axyridis exhibited the longest pre-oviposition ( X ¼ 7.4 days) and interoviposition ( X ¼ 3.6 days) periods and the shortest oviposition period ( X ¼ 13.7 days). The Bieri model was used to describe age-specific fecundity for the three species of coccinellids. The intrinsic rate of increase (r m ), net reproductive rate (R 0 ) and mean generation time (T) were higher for H. variegata (r m ¼ 0.114, R 0 ¼ 52.75, T ¼ 41.88 days) than for H. axyridis (r m ¼ 0.089, R 0 ¼ 26.27, T ¼ 38.81 days) or A. bipunctata (r m ¼ 0.081, R 0 ¼ 18.49, T ¼ 40.06 days). Our findings show that the biological traits of H. axyridis do not seem to be factors that may contribute to the invasiveness of this coccinellid.

Myzus persicae (Sulzer) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) is one of the most common and harmful pest species attacking sweet pepper. Here, we compared the predation rate and performance of Adalia bipunctata (L.), Hippodamia variegata (Goeze), and Scymnus interruptus Goeze (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) fed on M. persicae infesting sweet pepper. In the laboratory, when offered 150 aphids daily, A. bipunctata was the most voracious species (predation per adult female of 122.7 aphids per 24 h) followed by H. variegata (87.7) and S. interruptus (27.3). When offered 50 aphids, 92% of the S. interruptus larvae developed to adults, 48% of H. variegata, and only 7% of A. bipunctata. In greenhouse experiments, A. bipunctata completely eradicated the aphid population within 2 days following release, whereas H. variegata and S. interruptus initially reduced the aphid population; however, in the long‐term, the infestation was not controlled. Adults of A. bipunctata remained on the plants even in the absence of prey but they laid almost no eggs. Very few adults of H. variegata and S. interruptus were recorded on the plants despite the presence of prey, yet egg laying was observed. Overall, A. bipunctata had an immediate impact on the aphids and is more suitable for curative releases. However, it showed limited potential to establish in the crop. Due to their capacity to complete development with low prey availability, the potential of H. variegata and S. interruptus for preventative releases against aphids in greenhouse crops should be studied further.

Phenological and some biological characteristics of Hippodamia (Adonia) variegata (Goeze) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), such as voltinism, hibernation, number of progeny produced by each generation, mating activity and sex ratio were studied, in order to evaluate the significance of this predator. The study of phenology was conducted in outdoor cages in Kifissia (Athens), during 1999-2001 and as prey was given Dysaphis crataegi (Kaltenbach). Hippodamia variegata completed seven generations between April and November. The hibernating population of H. variegata consisted of adults of 6th and 7th generations. The fecundity of the predator was studied under constant conditions [25°C, 65% R.H. and 16:8(L:D)h photoperiod] in the laboratory and some population parameters were calculated: The total fecundity ranged between 789 and 1256 eggs, while the mean total fecundity was 959.6 eggs. The greatest proportion of eggs (45%) was oviposited in clutches of 11-20 eggs. The net reproductive value (R 0 ) was found to be 425.9 females/female, the intrinsic rate of increase (r m ) 0.178 females/female/day and the mean generation time (T) 34.0 days.
