“…Otoliths were removed using the open-thehatch technique as described by Secor et al (1992), cleaned from tissues with 5% NaOH, washed with distilled water, dried and stored in labeled vials. To avoid the effect of ontogenetic variability, only otoliths from sexually mature specimens were used in this study (Stransky and MacLellan 2005), hence, maturity stage of individuals was assigned using macroscopic gonadal examination following Vazzoler (1996). A digital picture of the left sagittae from each individual was taken using a stereoscopic binocular microscope Leica S8-APO equipped with a camera Leica EC3.…”

“…In Cuba we chose another index because most the commercial fisheries are based in benthic food chains while pelagic fishes, which strictly feed on plankton, are uncommon (Baisre, 1985). In fact, some of the typical pelagic species like thread herring (O. oglinum) feeds on small crustaceans; obtaining a major component of their food from the bottom in estuarine and coastal waters (Vega-Cendejas et al, 1997). Based on this characteristic, we used the ratio between catches of estuarine species to catches of species living in seagrass beds and coral reefs, and this seems to be a more appropriate index if we want to measure the impact of river damming on the fish components of coastal ecological communities.…”

“…Length weight relationships (LWR) are very useful for fisheries research (conversions to weight from length data, estimations of biomass, condition of the fish) and for between‐region comparisons of life histories of certain species (Froese and Pauly, 1998). In southeastern Mexico, several coastal systems are in protected areas and LWRs are very scarce (Vega‐Cendejas et al., 1997). However, this information is necessary for the purpose of fisheries management in the area as well as for estimation of the biomass of the fish species.…”
