Biomarker signatures of the Middle Jurassic coals from the Zhangjialiang mine in Dongsheng coalfield, North China: Implications for palaeoenvironment and palaeovegetation

Abstract: The study on the Zhangjialiang No. 2 coal of Middle Jurassic Yan'an Formation in the northeastern Ordos Basin has been analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to determine geochemical characteristics and reconstruct palaeovegetation and palaeoclimate changes. The distribution of n-alkanes is mainly unimodal, with a medium and high molecular weight. Pr/Ph ratio (2.03–10.6) is high in most samples. The values of Tm/Ts ratio are between 1.42 and 4.92, and a predominance of C29 over C27 steranes h… Show more

“…The different distribution patterns of n-alkane could indicate different origins of organic matter (Liu et al, 2022a(Liu et al, , 2022cMoldowan et al, 1985). For example, terrestrial plants-derived organic matter commonly contains more n-alkanes than aquatic matter (Peters et al, 2005;Zhang et al, 2023). The alkane profiles of most samples are dominated by mid-or long-chain n-alkanes, indicating a greater contribution from terrestrial higher plants in this study (Bechtel et al, 2012;Ficken et al, 2000;Nott et al, 2000).…”
