Biomass burning events measured by lidars in EARLINET. Part II. Results and discussions

Abstract: Abstract. Biomass burning events are analysed using the European Aerosol Research Lidar Network database for atmospheric profiling of aerosols by lidars. Atmospheric profiles containing forest fires layers were identified in data collected by fourteen stations during 2008–2017. The data ranged from complete data sets (particle backscatter coefficient, extinction coefficient and linear depolarization ratio) to single profiles (particle backscatter coefficient). The data analysis methodology was described in Par… Show more

“…hand, the small value for the EUAF region (corresponding to bigger particles) may be due to the major contribution of the AF region (as the value is not close to the EU value) corresponding to relatively big smoke travel time. Further analysis will be performed in part II (Adam et al, 2020), where both CR LR and EAE will be accounted for when interpreting the smoke (fresh versus aged) based on the same measurements. The scatter plots between EAE and the two BAEs are opposite.…”

Numerous wild forest fire events occur each year in Europe (refer to annual reports from the European Commission on "Forest Fires in Europe, Middle East and North Africa YYYY" at http://effis.jrc.ec.europa.eu/ reports-and-publications/annual-fire-reports/ available since 2000, where YYYY represents the year; last access: 26 November 2019).…”

“…The reception has a Cassegrain telescope with field of view, and the system acquisition is both analog and photon counting, with a analog sampling rate and photon-counting count rate. The RALI lidar system was upgraded and tested against other lidar systems, and its results have been published in multiple other studies [ 22 , 23 , 24 ].…”
