Giant miscanthus (Miscanthus × giganteus Greef and Deuter) and Amur silver grass (Miscanthus sacchariflorus Maxim./Hack) are rhizomatous grasses with a C4 photosynthetic pathway that are widely cultivated as energy crops. For those species to be successfully used in bioenergy generation, their yields have to be maintained at a high level in the long term. The biomass yield (fresh and dry matter [DM] yield) and energy efficiency (energy inputs, energy output, energy gain, and energy efficiency ratio) of giant miscanthus and Amur silver grass were compared in a field experiment conducted in 2007–2017 in North‐Eastern Poland. Both species were characterized by high above‐ground biomass yields, and the productive performance of M. × giganteus was higher in comparison with M. sacchariflorus (15.5 vs. 9.3 Mg DM ha−1 year−1 averaged for 1–11 years of growth). In the first year of the experiment, the energy inputs associated with the production of M. × giganteus and M. sacchariflorus were determined at 70.5 and 71.5 GJ/ha, respectively, and rhizomes accounted for around 78%–79% of total energy inputs. In the remaining years of cultivation, the total energy inputs associated with the production of both perennial rhizomatous grasses reached 13.6–15.7 (M. × giganteus) and 16.9–17.5 GJ ha−1 year−1 (M. sacchariflorus). Beginning from the second year of cultivation, mineral fertilizers were the predominant energy inputs in the production of M. × giganteus (78%–86%) and M. sacchariflorus (80%–82%). In years 2–11, the energy gain of M. × giganteus reached 50 (year 2) and 264–350 GJ ha−1 year−1 (years 3–11), and its energy efficiency ratio was determined at 4.7 (year 2) and 18.6–23.3 (years 3–11). The energy gain and the energy efficiency ratio of M. sacchariflorus biomass in the corresponding periods were determined at 87–234 GJ ha−1 year−1 and 6.1–14.3, respectively. Both grasses are significant and environmentally compatible sources of bioenergy, and they can be regarded as potential energy crops for Central‐Eastern Europe.

Bioenergy demand is accelerating day by day due to increase in population pressure whereas on other end worldwide water scarcity for irrigation is also becoming a challenge. This problem may be resolved through the fertigation with grey water for biomass production through short rotation intensive cultural plantation systems (SRICPS). The grey water generated from households constitutes the major portion of domestic wastewater with higher nutritive value. Reuse and recycling of grey water save natural water resources require for irrigation and moreover greywater use would be an added advantage to increase in the biomass due to its nutritive quality. Therefore, in present study, an experimental trial has been done for comparison of SRICPS biomass production within treatment (fertigated with greywater) and control (irrigated with bore well water) plots for biomass growth rate, biomass deficit and estimation of actual and potential biomass productivity with fertigation and control irrigation in same environmental condition by planting Eucalyptus hybrid (clone K‐413). Eucalyptus hybrid (clone K‐413) above ground biomass (AGBM) production per tree was observed to be 34.19 kg tree−1 in treatment plots as compared to 25.69 kg tree−1 in control plots during initial 2‐year of field observation and it envisages higher economic returns by fertigation due to higher biomass production per unit area as compared to control irrigation. © 2014 American Institute of Chemical Engineers Environ Prog, 34: 222–226, 2015

Plant roots and GHG mitigation in native perennial bioenergy cropping systems

Native perennial bioenergy crops can mitigate greenhouse gases (GHG) by displacing fossil fuels with renewable energy and sequestering atmospheric carbon (C) in soil and roots. The relative contribution of root C to net GHG mitigation potential has not been compared in perennial bioenergy crops ranging in species diversity and N fertility. We measured root biomass, C, nitrogen (N), and soil organic carbon (SOC) in the upper 90 cm of soil for five native perennial bioenergy crops managed with and without N fertilizer. Bioenergy crops ranged in species composition and were annually harvested for 6 (one location) and 7 years (three locations) following the seeding year. Total root biomass was 84% greater in switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) and a four-species grass polyculture compared to high-diversity polycultures; the difference was driven by more biomass at shallow soil depth (0-30 cm). Total root C (0-90 cm) ranged from 3.7 Mg C ha À1 for a 12-species mixture to 7.6 Mg C ha À1for switchgrass. On average, standing root C accounted for 41% of net GHG mitigation potential. After accounting for farm and ethanol production emissions, net GHG mitigation potential from fossil fuel offsets and root C was greatest for switchgrass (À8.4 Mg CO2e ha À1 yr À1 ) and lowest for high-diversity mixtures (À4.5 Mg CO2e ha À1 yr À1). Nitrogen fertilizer did not affect net GHG mitigation potential or the contribution of roots to GHG mitigation for any bioenergy crop. SOC did not change and therefore did not contribute to GHG mitigation potential. However, associations among SOC, root biomass, and root C : N ratio suggest greater long-term C storage in diverse polycultures vs. switchgrass. Carbon pools in roots have a greater effect on net GHG mitigation than SOC in the short-term, yet variation in root characteristics may alter patterns in long-term C storage among bioenergy crops.
