Biomathematical pattern of EMG signal propagation in smooth muscle of the non-pregnant porcine uterus

Abstract: Uterine contractions are generated by myometrial smooth muscle cells (SMCs) that comprise most of the myometrial layer of the uterine wall. Aberrant uterine motility (i.e., hypo- or hyper-contractility or asynchronous contractions) has been implicated in the pathogenesis of infertility due to the failure of implantation, endometriosis and abnormal estrous cycles. The mechanism whereby the non-pregnant uterus initiates spontaneous contractions remains poorly understood. The aim of the present study was to emplo… Show more

“…The frequency, amplitude and duration of contractions are determined mainly by the frequency of occurrence of the uterine electrical bursts, the total number of cells that are simultaneously active during the bursts and the duration of the uterine electrical bursts, respectively (Garfield & Maner, ; Domino et al . , ; Pawlinski et al . ).…”

“…In research conducted with the use of telemetry, the surgical technique, the materials used and the design of the electrodes are of vital importance. Many published studies focus on non-pregnant, cycling uterine contractile activity in the rat (Ishikawa & Fuchs, 1978;Downing et al 1981;Crane & Martin, 1991a,b), guinea-pig (Chernaeva & Milenov, 1974), dog (Wheaton et al 1988), cow (Ruckebusch & Bayard, 1975;Hirsbrunner et al 2002Hirsbrunner et al , 2010Kaufmann et al 2008), horse (Hirsbrunner et al 2006) and sow (Mwanza et al 2002;Domino et al 2016Domino et al , 2017aPawlinski et al 2016). The induction and synchronization of oestrus are the most prevalent procedures performed to manage the timing of oestrus to meet the needs of the farm.…”

“…High-frequency activity was low during voiding (Figs. 1j, 2a,d), whereas in contrast, slow-wave bursting activity (2-20 Hz, representing mainly smooth muscle activity; Domino et al, 2017) was prominent (Figs. 1j, 2a,d).…”

“…The actual EMG signal originating from muscle activities can degrade due to the mixing noise or artifacts [13,17,18]. These noises could arise from several factors, such as motion artifact due to muscle and electrodes movement concerning one another and the power line interference.…”
