Biomedical Applicable Cellulose Fabric Modified with Zirconium‐Based Metal‐Organic Frameworks (Zr‐MOFs)

Abstract: Zirconium-based metal-organic frameworks (Zr-MOFs) have been synthesized onto diverse substrates however thermal and acidic conditions of synthesis processing impair or carbonize the polysaccharide based substrate. Also, MOF-coated polysaccharides usually show poor mechanical properties and instability in aqueous conditions unsuitable for biomedical applications. There is no report on the synthesis of MOFs on cellulosic substrate to preserve intactness. Here, an optimized Zr-MOFs synthesis method on cotton fab… Show more

“…Both of these materials irreversibly capture Cl 2 significantly better than unfunctionalized UiO-66 and a representative mesoporous carbon. Considering that Zr-MOFs have been widely appended to fabrics already, , both Zr-fum and Zr-stilbene could function as protective Cl 2 sponges in next-generation PPE. Beyond their application for Cl 2 capture, the linker dichlorination reactions reported herein enable the installation of sp 3 -hydridized carbons within MOFs, which is difficult to achieve but can improve the MOF’s mechanical properties …”

“…For biomedical purposes, MOFs of multivalent metals such as zirconium (IV) [40], iron (III) [41,42], zinc (II) [43], and copper (II) [44] are more applicable. The ligands used in MOF synthesis usually have several carboxylic or amine functional groups that depart either from the alkyl chain or from a ring structure such as benzene or imidazole [45].…”
