Biomedical Teleacupuncture between China and Austria Using Heart Rate Variability, Part 1: Poststroke Patients

Abstract: Background. Acupuncture has been reported to affect the human autonomic system. Within this pilot study, teleacupuncture between China and Austria is used for the first time for quantifying the effects of heart rate variability (HRV) in poststroke rehabilitation. Methods. In 29 Chinese post-stroke patients (15 f, 14 m; mean age ± SD 64.7 ± 11.3 years; range 40–80 years) electrocardiographic signals before, during, and after acupuncture at the acupoint Tongli (HT 5) were recorded in Harbin and analyzed in Graz … Show more

“…After disinfecting the skin at the chosen acupoint(s) (see below), the needle was inserted and stimulated clockwise and counterclockwise for 15 seconds each, with two rotations per second, resulting in 30 rotations [10]. After ten minutes, the needle was removed.…”

“…For example, acupuncture was reported to decrease elevated blood pressure in animal models, via downregulation of renal sympathetic activity (79). Furthermore, tele-acupuncture was reported to significantly increase HRV during and for 5-10 min after acupuncture in post-stroke patients, and there was a marked improvement in the balance of SNS/PSN activity (80). Moxibustion may also lower blood pressure in patients with prehypertension (81), although the mechanisms involving regulation of SNS/PNS balance require further study.…”

“…Beside HRV power spectral analysis, the so-called “Fire of Life” analysis (Huntleigh Healthcare, Cardiff, UK) is a new method of visualization of HRV, which has been described only in few scientific publications by our research group [812]. …”
