Biometrics and education: a review about facial authentication software for the identification and verification of students who use virtual learning platform (LMS)

Abstract: Abstract:In the last decade, the use of biometrics has had a lot of success applied to the security and video surveillance tools. Due to that, facial authentication has a preferred place in continuous development with the purpose of getting the identification and verification of the user. Specifically, the use of facial authentication in virtual online environments is so important in order to improve the security mechanism in e-Learning systems, mostly in the field of online exams into a virtual platform. “…(2018) proposed an adaptive trust-based e-assessment system that can be used for authenticating the authorship of the student in the online exam assessment environment. In the same vein, Guillén-Gámez (2017) suggested that to verify the identity and to avoid or minimise academic fraud, HEIs need to utilise facial authentication software in the learning and teaching process when using online learning platforms.…”

“…However, ensuring the quality of online activities through monitoring and evaluation is crucial to reduce cheating and uphold a high-quality education system. Prior research has utilized biometrics for identification and monitoring during online learning and testing sessions [9][10][11], yet a system for face recognition and detecting facial expressions would be more user-friendly, considering that most computers or user devices come with built-in cameras for online learning. Moreover, the FR/FER system can consistently identify learners throughout their learning journey or real-time tracking of students' learning interactions within the learning management system (LMS), enabling educators and administrators to more effectively address each learner's training process [4,12,13].…”
