Biomimetic Conducting Polymers: Synthesis, Materials, Properties, Functions, and Devices

Abstract: Electro-generations of conducting polymers are fast processes through a complex mechanism of parallel reactions giving mixed materials. The films are three-dimensional electrochemical reactors: reactive macromolecules, ions, and solvent. The film composition and its related properties reviewed here change by oxidation/reduction along several orders of magnitude under control. One reaction shifts different properties (multifunctionality). In one device several reaction driven tools, actuators and sensor, work s… Show more

“…Likewise, the R sol starts at 0% and increases as the film swells. The increase in thickness due to polymer oxidation is already described in literature [62][63][64]. The change of this resistance are presented in Figure 6.…”

“…This suggests that the presence of perchlorate leads to an increase in the twisting of the monomeric units, leading to a slight chain shortening. Macroscopically, such shortening is associated with a change in volume that, as described in different papers [62,66,67] and in Figure 6, could be responsible for the polymer degradation when submitted to electrochemical cycles.…”

“…The backbone of PPy lacks electrons under oxidative conditions in the polymerization process, which needs anions to balance its positive charge (Supplementary Information and Supplementary Figure S2). 28 Thus, negatively charged drugs are able to dope into PPy under oxidative conditions. When under reductive conditions, the backbone of PPy is neutralized; therefore, the anions are pushed out from the PPy backbone.…”

“…[11][12][13][14] Specifically, significant efforts have been focused on CP actuators that exhibit large volume changes in air upon the sorption or desorption of the water vapor present in ambient air under the application of an electric current. [15][16][17][18][19][20] For example, a humidity-driven, bilayered, anisotropic actuator has been reported based on a PEDOT-polystyrenesulfonic acid (PEDOT:PSS) layer with a soft poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) layer. This actuator showed an intrinsic sensing capability via the joule effect or directly via environmental humidity variations.…”
