Biomimetic PLGA/Strontium-Zinc Nano Hydroxyapatite Composite Scaffolds for Bone Regeneration

Abstract: Synthetic bone graft substitutes have attracted increasing attention in tissue engineering. This study aimed to fabricate a novel, bioactive, porous scaffold that can be used as a bone substitute. Strontium and zinc doped nano-hydroxyapatite (Sr/Zn n-HAp) were synthesized by a water-based sol-gel technique. Sr/Zn n-HAp and poly (lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) were used to fabricate composite scaffolds by supercritical carbon dioxide technique. FTIR, XRD, TEM, SEM, and TGA were used to characterize Sr/Zn n-HAp an… Show more

“…ACP and HA crystals have different calcium (Ca): phosphorus (P) ratio ratios and crystallinity [ 6 ]. Therefore, it is an effective mechanical factor due to its higher stiffness and crystallinity [ 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 ]. HA can effectively promote the growth of osteoblast with high crystallinity.…”

“…Nanomaterial interfaces lead to an irregular arrangement of atoms, which makes it easy for the atoms to migrate under the external deformation force. Therefore, incorporation of nano ceramic materials improves the mechanical properties of the materials [ 23 , 43 , 44 ]. This could be the reason why PU/HA nano 25% has a lower Young’s modulus than PU.…”

“…In our previously published work [ 59 ], we analyzed the influence of Sr 2+ and Zn 2+ doping on nHAp crystallinity, and we were successfully able to synthesize Sr/Zn-doped nHAp-PLGA composite scaffolds with adequate porosity, bioactivity, and degradability. The XRD pattern and FTIR spectra revealed the phase composition and crystal properties of nHAp in both Sr/Zn-doped powders and composite scaffolds and also confirmed the incorporation of PLGA in the scaffolds.…”
