Biomimetic superelastic graphene-based cellular monoliths

Abstract: Many applications proposed for graphene require multiple sheets be assembled into a monolithic structure. The ability to maintain structural integrity upon large deformation is essential to ensure a macroscopic material which functions reliably. However, it has remained a great challenge to achieve high elasticity in three-dimensional graphene networks. Here we report that the marriage of graphene chemistry with ice physics can lead to the formation of ultralight and superelastic graphene-based cellular monoli… Show more

“…In this case, the ice only grows gradually from outside interface to inside, during which the layers tend to concentrate at the boundary of ice crystals and align vertically. [60,61] In order to obtain a homogeneous 3D assembly, the GO dispersion should be congruently frozen. Thus, the volume of the dispersion must be minimized.…”

“…Manufacturing processes can be distinguished between a template-based [9][10][11] and a templatefree [12] methods for the direct production of carbon aerogels. In addition, assembly of graphitic structures [13][14][15][16] can be carried out. One of these methods was the discovery of Aerographite [11].…”
