Biomodeling System - Interaction Between Living Neuronal Networks and the Outer World

Abstract: Rat hippocampal neurons reorganized into complex networks in a culture dish with 64 planar microelectrodes and the electrical activity of neurons were recorded from individual sites. Multi-site recording system for extracellular action potentials was used for recording the activity of living neuronal networks and for applying input from the outer world to the network. The living neuronal network was able to distinguish among patterns of evoked action potentials based on different input, suggesting that the liv… Show more

“…Dissociated neuron was plated with a nominal density of 2500 cells/mm 2 onto a poly(ethylenimine)-coated multi-electrode dish (MED) probe (Alpha MED Scientific, Osaka, Japan). The probe consisted of 64 planar microelectrodes and 4 reference electrodes [Kudoh et al, 2007;Hosokawa et al, 2008;Ito et al, 2010]. Each electrode was 50×50 m 2 and the electrode spacing was 150 m.…”

“…At the present time we examine this issue using a neuro-robotic system consisting of a single dissociated culture system and a small mobile robot. So far, we achieved a collision avoidance behavior [28]. We also obtained preliminary results suggesting that the ensemble learning was established in the neural system.…”

“…In this paper, we introduce a fuzzy bio-interface between a culture dish of rat hippocampal neurons and the khepera robot [4]- [8]. We propose a model to analyze logic of signals and connectivity of electrodes in a culture dish, and show the bio-robot hybrid we developed [9], [10].…”

“…Unfortunately, they have not yet achieved a certain task that experimenter desired. We show a robot system that controlled by a living neuronal network through the fuzzy bio-interface in order to achieve such a task [4]- [8]. This fuzzy bio-interface consists of two sets of fuzzy IF-THEN rules: (1) to translate sensor signals of robot into stimuli for the living neuronal network, and (2) to control (i.e.…”
