Biomonitoring of selected persistent organic pollutants (PCDD/Fs, PCBs and PBDEs) in Finnish and Russian terrestrial and aquatic animal species

Abstract: BackgroundThe Finnish and Russian animal species (semi-domesticated reindeer, Finnish wild moose, Baltic grey seal and Baltic herring) samples were biomonitored in terrestrial and aquatic environments for polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenylethers (PBDEs).ResultsGrey seal (Halichoerus grypus) was clearly the most contaminated species. The mean PBDE concentration in grey seal was 115 ng/g fat, and the highest WHO-PCDD/F-PCB-T… Show more

“…On this basis, analysis of the livers for piglet according to disease type was performed because the liver sample accumulates more dioxin compounds than other organs (Fernandes et al 2010;Conka et al 2012;Rose et al 2012). It is known that due to its detoxification properties, liver gathers toxic compounds in the greater extent when compared with the other internal organs (Shen et al 2012b;Holma-Suutari et al 2016) (Table 3). Five liver samples of each North American-type and European-type PRRSV that cause a disease of pigs were analysed.…”

“…High dioxin content is speci c only for liver, their concentrations in other organs and tissues like muscle, kidneys, fat, spleen, blood etc. are relatively low [Holma-Suutari et al 2016].…”

“…Over the past decades, there have been of great concern over the prevalence and environmental fate of some legacy BFRs such as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and hexabromocyclododecanes (HBCDs). Due to their persistent, bioaccumulative, toxic, and long-range transportable properties [2][3][4][5][6], Tetra-through Hepta-BDEs, Deca-BDE, and HBCDs had been listed in Annex A of the Stockholm Convention as persistent organic pollutants (POPs) for elimination by 2017 [7]. To meet flammability standards for goods and materials, the usage of alternative or novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) has rapidly increased in recent years [8].…”
